Salad plates sit between the dinner plates and the saucers, and they rarely get a container of their own. This cream chest holds 12 of them in separate compartments, stands 8 inches high on a 10 inch square base, and names its contents through a clear front panel.
Each of the 12 bays takes one salad plate or bowl, with felt protectors guarding the faces against the chips and cracks that come from stacking china directly. Separating the pieces also lets the chest be carried without the familiar sound of a stack shifting against itself inside.
A cream shell bound in brown trim gives the chest a quieter tone than seasonal colors, which suits a dining room sideboard or a glass-front cabinet where the storage itself is partly on show. Sturdy siding keeps the walls upright so the compartments inside do not pinch together under load.
The 10 by 10 inch base makes this chest a cube rather than a tray, so it uses cupboard height instead of shelf width and lines up neatly beside chests holding other courses. Reinforced riveted handles take the weight of a filled set down from an upper shelf in one lift.
Six-piece black magnet set of four hinges and two handles that gives a steel garage door carriage-house detailing.
Six forest green fabric cubes with grommet pulls, each 11 inches square for standard cube shelving.
