The taper is the structural idea: the body narrows toward the base, so the 16.5 inch mouth sits above a smaller footprint and the basket pulls in at the floor. Black and white fibers form a bold abstract figure across the 15.5 inch height, handwoven rather than applied.
Sloping the walls inward does two things: the opening stays generous at 16.5 inches for dropping in pillows and throws, while the base occupies less floor than the rim suggests. That makes the basket easier to place against baseboard trim or under a sloped ceiling. The 15.5 inch height keeps the mouth at an easy reach from a standing position.
White ground and black fiber meet with no middle tone, which is why the pattern reads from across a room rather than only up close. The figures are large-scale and angular, closer to graphic textile work than to traditional basketry detail. Against plain upholstery the basket does the decorative work by itself, which suits a Moroccan or abstract room.
Handles tie into the structured wire frame on both sides, so the basket can go to the laundry room loaded with towels and come back as a hamper. A 16.5 inch span is about shoulder width, which is why two side grips work better here than a single top handle. Nothing is bolted on: the grips are part of the same weave that forms the walls.
