In an apartment without a laundry room, a board has to live somewhere out of the way. This one hangs on the back of a door, folds down to a 44 by 14 inch surface for pressing, and swings closed again on its own frame once the last shirt is done.
The slim steel frame mounts over the top of a door and lets the board drop into position, then fold back flat against the panel. Nothing has to be carried in from a closet or wrestled open on the floor, which is often the practical difference between pressing a collar and skipping it.
The ironing surface is perforated steel mesh, so steam passes through the fabric instead of collecting underneath and dampening the shirt. A padded layer and cotton cover sit over the mesh, giving the top enough give for buttons while the metal beneath keeps the board rigid across its 44-inch length.
A holder on the frame takes the iron between garments, keeping a hot soleplate off the door and away from the surrounding wall. Combined with the 14-inch width, the whole assembly stays within the depth of a doorway, which suits dorm rooms, condos, and RVs where floor space is already spoken for.
