A drawer and a shelf cover different needs at a bedside: one hides what should not be on display, the other holds a book within reach. This square table combines them at 23.5 inches high, with a mock rattan drawer face breaking up the matte black.
The drawer face carries a mock rattan weave, a textured panel that catches light differently from the flat surfaces around it and keeps a dark table from reading as a solid block. Behind it the drawer closes over chargers, reading glasses, and the other bedside items best kept out of sight.
Everything but the drawer front is finished matte black, including the slender metal legs that lift the body clear of the floor. That raised base makes a small room read larger, since the eye travels underneath, and the dark finish settles into schemes built on charcoal walls or dark wood flooring.
Below the drawer an open shelf stays visible and reachable from a seated position, a place for a current book, a folded throw, or a low basket. Splitting storage between closed and open means the table handles both the private items and the ones meant to be picked up without opening anything.
