A solid slab of Eastern red cedar, 2 inches wide and 9.63 inches tall, hangs among clothes on a steel hook and works by scent alone. Milled faces keep the natural oils exposed. Unscrew the hook and the same block lies flat inside a drawer, a trunk, or a packed suitcase.
The block is milled on its faces rather than polished smooth, exposing more open grain to the air so the aromatic oils in the cedar can do their work. When the scent eventually fades, a light pass with sandpaper opens the surface again, which is what makes solid cedar last far longer than a sachet.
