Smooth birchwood makes up both jaws, sanded enough that it will not snag a knit sweater or leave splinters in a damp shirt. The spring is steel rather than a lighter alloy, which is what keeps the grip firm on a windy line and stops a pin from sagging open after a few seasons outdoors.
