Open, it is a 25 inch cylinder; closed, a disc 1.5 inches thick. That gap between the two states is the argument for a spring wire frame, and it decides whether a hamper can live in a dorm closet, a suitcase, or the back of a car between semesters.
Collapsing the spring wire frame drops the hamper from 25 inches of height to a flat ring an inch and a half thick, slim enough to slide between a mattress and a bed frame. Nothing unscrews and nothing comes apart, so the same twist that stores it also brings it back to full height.
The bottom panel is solid polyester rather than mesh, which keeps small items from working their way through and gives the cylinder a base that holds its circle when loaded. Heavy duty mesh takes over from there up the sides, where air circulation is worth more than a closed wall.
Straps sewn to the body let a full 16 inch cylinder be lifted and carried as it is, so the contents go to the machine without being transferred into a basket first. In black, the hamper also stays visually quiet in a dim closet or a rented room where it has to stand in the open.
